Meet the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Humberto Rosas Professor of Radiology |

Research area Developing a novel respiratory monitoring device that detects breathing problems in patients early, quantitatively and in real time.
What excites you about your work?
“I started looking into the problem of sedation-related respiratory compromise because it was a recurring topic and an issue about which my wife, Professor Guelay Bilen-Rosas, was passionate. This is a global issue, and there are a large number of cases of brain damage, cardiovascular events, and even death secondary to sedation-related respiratory compromise, all of which could be avoided if detected early.”
What do you hope to achieve?
“I’m hoping my wife and I can give back to the next group of people who are coming up with a research or entrepreneurial project.”
Guelay and Humberto’s joint work in creating a real-time and quantitative breathing assessment device will help communicate respiratory problems before they arise. We look forward to seeing how this technology improves patient care.
