Inventors: Michael Bentz, Lennon Rodgers, Karl Williamson
The Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) is providing a time-limited royalty free license, which can be accessed here, to companies to help facilitate rapid deployment of a surgical face shield to protect health care workers or others during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Overview
The importance of face shields in preventing the transmission of infectious agents is increasingly well established. Typically, a face shield will include a headband that can be clamped about the head to support a transparent shield that can be positioned over the eyes and mouth of the user. However, traditional face shields interfere with eye loupes commonly worn during surgery.
The Invention
Designed by a UW Health surgeon along with the University of Wisconsin Makerspace, this face shield is formed of a sheet of flexible material bent in an arc about a user's face with ends supported by the temples of glasses worn by the user. Cut outs in the face shield accommodate the use of loupe magnification, headlights and cameras without interference during procedures.
Materials and use instructions are available with a time-limited royalty free license, which can be accessed here.
