The Invention

UW-Madison researchers have developed a digitally controlled CSF drainage device for use in the ICU setting that provides improved precision and safety. The novel design significantly reduces over or under drainage of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from the brain or spinal cord using an extra-ventricular drain (EVD) in the brain or lumbar drainage device (LDD) and automated intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring. The drainage catheter of the EVD connects to a flow controller which controls the flow of CSF from the drainage catheter without the need for constant manual re-leveling.
