The Invention

UW researchers have created a novel rotor hub structure that uses an airfoil or blade (similar to what is used in fans, compressors, or turbines) to enable self-cooling. In conventional rotor structures, a hub can be added that contains spokes between the shaft and outer edge. In this invention, instead of straight spokes, the “spokes” are shaped as airfoil blades. As the rotor rotates, the blades produce airflow. Adding this rotor hub structure does not change how permanent magnets are inserted in the rotor iron, but does enable self-cooling.
