The Invention
A UW-Madison researcher has discovered two cell surface biomarkers that can be used to distinguish older and newer MSCs in patient samples, which facilitates the separation of newer MSCs for therapeutic administration. There is variability in the apparent age of MSC cells, and the inventors have discovered that ‘younger’ and ‘older’ MSCs can be distinguished using the two cell surface markers epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM) and sushi domain containing 2 (SUSD2); they’ve demonstrated in mouse and human cells that EpCAM+SUSD2- cells are younger and more robust, whereas EpCAM-SUSD2+ cells are older and less robust. This provides a unique method for enhancing therapeutic efficacy, and the inventor expects this to create a paradigm shift in how MSCs should be prepared for clinical use to improve therapeutic outcomes.
