Analyzing light is critical across all areas of science but spectrometers can cost tens of thousands of dollars. Inspired by Planck’s law, researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison look to ‘democratize’ spectroscopy using three simple components: a heater, a thermometer and an infrared detector.
